House notes
Behind the Kitchen Door
A masthead is the old newspaper word for the list of people who make a publication. Ours is short. Four of us write Gargetter Lifestyle, each under a pen name, each with a corner of everyday life we cannot stop poking at. We like pen names because they keep the focus on the advice rather than on us, and because none of us enjoys seeing our real names in search results.
What follows is the honest version. No titles, no diplomas we do not have, no claims that we are the leading anything. Just four people with strong opinions about microwaves, remote controls and packing cubes.
Who does what
Sorrel – home and cleaning
Sorrel is the one who reads the care label before touching anything, then reads it again. Most of our household pieces start on Sorrel's desk, including the mattress refresh guide that taught the rest of us the difference between blotting and scrubbing. Sorrel believes most cleaning disasters come from mixing products, and will remind you of that whether you asked or not.
Clovis – film nights and the screen
Clovis handles everything that happens on the big screen at home: how people watch now, what the different services and set-ups mean in plain language, and how to turn a Tuesday into a film night. Clovis also keeps a very long list of films to watch and a very short list of films actually watched.
Hesper – gadgets and little fixes
Hesper is our tinkerer. Smart lighting, picture frames that show family photos, kettles, awnings, anything with a switch or a hinge. If a gadget promises to save time, Hesper wants to know whether it really does, and what it costs you in fiddling to get there.
Mirabel – travel, food and the good stuff
Mirabel writes about trips, kitchens and the small pleasures in between: a weekend away, a new ingredient, flowers for a friend, a celebration that does not need to cost a fortune. Mirabel packs light, cooks generously and has strong feelings about window seats.
How we work together
Every article has a lead writer and a second reader. The second reader's job is to be annoying in a helpful way: asking whether a step actually works, whether a sentence makes sense to someone in a hurry and whether we have quietly assumed something that is not true for everyone. Nothing goes live until both of us are happy with it.
When an article names a product or a business, treat it as one option among several and compare before you buy. More detail on that lives on Our Recommendation Process.
What we are not
We are not doctors, electricians, travel agents or financial advisers, and we will never write as if we were. When a question needs someone qualified to look at your home, your health or your money, we will say so plainly. That is a feature, not a cop-out.
Want to tell one of us something? Write to the whole crew via the Say Hello page and mention who you are hoping to reach. We share the inbox, so it will land in the right place.
We test the boring bits so you can get back to the good bits.
